Tracks We Can’t Stop Listening To - Old And New, Just For You, And This Time Legal!

Unfortunately, we got ourselves in to a spot of bother over our last post, and as a result it was deleted. Fear not though, we've learnt our lesson and have come up with a completely legal and ehtical alternative... a Spotify playlist. Yes we're rather limited in what we can point you in the direction of, but at least this way we get to keep our good name!

Anyhoo, here are our slightly amended, current musical obsessions. Enjoy!

Click here to listen to the below via our nifty Spotify playlist.

1. Britney Spears - Circus

2. Tegan And Sara - Walking With A Ghost

3. Brazilian Girls - Never Met A German

4. Metric – Monster Hospital

5. Grace Jones - Williams Blood

6. Girls Aloud – Love Is The Key

7. Saint Etienne – Only Love Can Break Your Heart

8. Eartha Kitt – I Want To Be Evil

9. Florence And The Machine – You’ve Got The Love (Candi Staton cover)

10. Sky Larkin – Fossil, I

Helen Of Troy... Please Try Harder

Well dear readers, the time has come for Helen Of Troy... to shapeshift yet again as we start our new residency at Underachievers Wednesday Sessions tomorrow night. We've got a cracking line-up for our inaugural event.

First up is the lovely Clare Helen, who combines intricate fretwork and honeyed vocals to tell tear-stained tales of 21st-century life.

After a dose of beautiful
acoustica, we'll jump to the other side of the musical spectrum with space-age pop trio Suki And The Science. This three-piece produce ethereal digi-pop guaranteed to get you dancing.

Before, between and after these live gems, the Helen Of Troy... DJs will be playing their usual selection of lovely lady music, with Grace Jones, Le Tigre, Brazilian Girls, thecocknbullkid and Carly Simon all scheduled for a spin.

We may have our first event ready to rock, but we're still on the look out for bands/musicians/filmmakers and artists to appear at future events. Drop us an email at clubhelenoftroy@googlemail.com if you have any ideas.

We're well excited about our Underachievers collaboration and hope y'all can make it down. The fun starts tomorrow (Weds 11th Feb) at 9pm and goes on til 1.30am, Saki Bar,
Rusholme. It's free in, so there's no excuse.

Wednesdays are the new Fridays don't you know!

New Music: Brazilian Girls

Helen Of Troy… reserves the right to call Brazilian Girls new, even if they’re on their third album, because we’ve only just heard of them. The New York trio may have been gigging and releasing Stateside for some time now, but to our knowledge, they’ve not yet broken over here, which is a crying shame as they’re frikkin’ awesome.

If you’re looking for a dose of delightfully spritely electro-pop, you need look no further. Current single Good Time is an infectious, smile-inducing shouty joy, replete with dumb-as-fuck lyrics, a Breeders-esque bassline and playschool synth accompaniment. Helen Of Troy… currently spends more time than is healthy trying to copy their ace accents.

Sabina Sciubba, Didi Gutman and Aaron Johnston are more than just one-track electro ponies, however. Tracks like Berlin, which has a delightfully sleazy Weimar cabaret feel, show the myriad diverse influences of the achingly cool trio, who blend decadent European eclecticism and scuzzy New York chic.
